I have already read “The Love Potion,” one of the novellas included in this volume, since it was featured in the anthology “In the Path of Jane Travels and Tales” edited by Carol S. Bowes. It did not stop me from rereading and enjoying it as much as when I read it the first time. In my opinion, a dash of magic and humour serves the romance between Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy well. This novella is a real treat for all true fans of the couple, who have always craved to see more of their interactions on the pages.
The second novella, “The Pemberley Ravens,” was a delightful discovery. Especially so, for this summer, during our morning walks, my son and I started noticing interesting behaviour in local ravens and crows. First of all, we were surprised to see ravens at all. Unlike crows, they’ve always been a rare sight. But more than that, we were surprised to watch the birds communicate with each other and react to different situations. The most fascinating moments we witnessed involved the birds-mothers with their children. After watching them the whole summer, I can say with certainty that they are highly intelligent and versatile birds.
In “The Pemberley Ravens,” Elizabeth and Mr Darcy are married. Their bliss of exploring the extensive grounds of Pemberley and each other gets interrupted by several occurrences. Soon, they will have to learn that a curious but seemingly insignificant encounter with ravens is destined to play an important role in their lives.
I found the feathery additions to the Pride and Prejudice universe utterly delightful. The couple of ravens have distinct personalities and, as I mentioned earlier, they are crucial to the plot. I think that readers will also appreciate the author including common people’s stories in the plot. While it is understandable why it did not occur to Jane Austen to tell us more about the maids, grooms, and the cook, their stories might excite as much interest in modern readers as their masters’.
I have enjoyed all of Kelly Miller’s tastefully written, page-turning Austenesque variations, and these two novellas weren’t an exception. I always look forward to what this wonderful author will present her readers with next.
