Interweaving life experience and fiction

I was looking forward to the Page Chewing episode featuring two amazing authors from Canada, Anne M. Smith-Nochasak and A-M Mawhiney. I’ve read all their books, and I knew that what they’d share would be deep and insightful. I wasn’t disappointed in my expectations. On the show, they discuss things that interest me as an author, and that I’m sure other authors will find useful and relatable.

Both Anne and Anne-Marie speak about their writing and publishing journey. What I found the most fascinating was how their life experiences led to writing the stories they’ve written. In their books, readers will find not only plotlines and characters – they are sprinkled with what their authors went through, felt, and saw.

“The spark and anticipation of a future unlived cannot be recaptured” “A Canoer of Shorelines” by Anne M. Smith-Nochasak

Both Julie Martin and Rachel Hardy aren’t whole. And they both believe that an old farm Meadowbrook Acres will make them such.

“Humans are the ones who construct love with walls around it” “The Ice Widow: A Story of Love and Redemption” by Anne M. Smith-Nochasak

“The Ice Widow” is a multi-layered portrayal of the paths we take in life. Just like people in real life, fictional characters in this story don’t always make it right. They stumble and fall. They see and do indecent, ugly things. They suffer. And they die. But also, like every one of us, if they don’t drive themselves down the precipice, they continue looking for an anchor. And for some, the sun rays sneaking through between the branches of the tree tops show them the way. Not necessarily to a perfect happily-ever-after with all the ingredients served neatly on a plate. But always to a sanctuary, designed especially for them. Simply because they have carved its walls themselves – by living.

What if the series of plagues wiped out the majority of the population? What if all the technological progress and advanced research couldn’t help find the cure? Which path would people choose?

According to A-M Mawhiney, people would turn back to nature and try to help the Earth heal. “Spindrifts” is a fascinating exploration of the effects dramatic events can have on the established lifestyle.

“We are entering a time of mystery and conflict. It is impossible to know the outcome. We must be united.” Will people from the Land of Hope protect their lifestyle, or will those who want the old ways to return succeed?

“Spelldrifts” by A-M Mawhiney invites readers to a world they don’t want to leave. Magic and technological progress coexist here in perfect synergy. Everyone is free to choose their path in life. Everyone can contribute to the greater good and satiate their creative ambitions. And still, without a counterweight, it’s impossible to maintain the balance.

“Spelldrifts” is a captivating blend of fantasy and sci-fi, this book has cast a spell on me from the first pages. And, honestly, I didn’t really want to wake from this entrancing dream.
